Diabetic management is where your podiatrist takes care of potential or active problems involving your feet and legs that are a consequence of having diabetes. Diabetes can affect both the blood and nerve supply which can cause your feet to be more susceptible to chronic problems.
Common things podiatrists will do for you in relation to diabetes include:
- Perform a neurovascular assessment to determine how at risk your feet are of developing ulceration.
- Assess your footwear to ensure the correct fit which can help prevent ulceration.
- Liaise with your G.P. to ensure all aspects of your diabetes is managed correctly.
Perform general foot care for you (nail cutting, callus and corn removal, treatment of ingrown nails) to help prevent any breakdown of the skin which can cause ulceration.
